What Is a .IN Domain?

.IN is the country code domain for India. The .IN Registry manages it, and NIXI runs that registry on behalf of the Government of India. Anyone can register a .IN name, as long as they pass identity verification.

The .IN domain opened to the public in 2005 and now has millions of registrations. Indian businesses, brands and individuals use it as their main address, or alongside a .com.

Who Can Register a .IN Domain?

.IN is not limited to Indian citizens. NIXI has made that clear. What it does require is accurate, verifiable details from every registrant, wherever they live.

Individuals and Businesses in India

Individuals, sole proprietors, companies, LLPs, partnerships, schools, trusts and NGOs can all register. One tip that saves trouble later: register the domain in the name of the actual owner. If you run a business, put the business name on the registration, not your web designer's name or an employee's. That avoids ownership disputes down the line.

NRIs and Companies Outside India

You can register a .IN domain from outside India, but you will need to show a genuine connection to India, through a signed declaration and an identity document such as a passport. We will not promise approval, since the registry makes that call, but we can tell you what to prepare.

NIXI requires every .IN registrant to verify their identity. For most people this is a one-time task, and it takes a few minutes if your details match your document. This is the part of the process most .IN pages skip. We are not going to skip it.

Why NIXI Requires KYC for .IN Domains

KYC confirms who actually owns each .IN domain. It cuts down on fraud and on fake websites pretending to be someone they are not.

When Do You Need to Complete KYC?

Within 7 days of registering a new .IN domain. [Confirm with your registrar whether KYC is also required again at renewal, on transfer in, or after a contact change, and state that plainly here rather than leaving it open.]

One rule matters more than any document: the registrant name, address, phone number, and email on the domain must match your identity document exactly, down to spelling, initials, and the order of your names.

A few things worth thinking about before you buy:

Keep it short and easy to say out loud. Read it aloud to someone and see if they can spell it back correctly.
If you are using a transliterated Indian word, pick the most common spelling, and think about registering the likely misspellings too.
Skip hyphens unless the name is genuinely hard to read without one.
Check trademarks on the IP India public search and check social handles before you buy. Being available to register does not mean you have the right to use it.
Avoid names built around well-known brands or sensitive words like bank or government terms. These attract extra checks and disputes.
Think ahead. If you plan to grow beyond one city, leave the city name out of the domain.
