You have finally settled on a business name. You type it into a domain search and find that the .com is gone, the .in is free, and there is a .co.in version sitting there too. Now what?
The .in vs .com question is one of the first things people ask before buying a domain, and the honest answer depends on one thing more than anything else: where your customers are. This guide walks through what each extension is, how they differ on rules, price, trust and SEO, and which one fits which kind of business. At the end there is a short checklist you can use before you pay for anything.
Short answer
- Most customers in India → choose .in.
- Most customers outside India, or you plan to sell globally → choose .com.
- Want an Indian address but the .in is taken → .co.in is a fair second choice.
- Can afford two names → register your main one and point the other to it.
The Three Extensions in Plain Words
.com: the global default
.com is a generic top-level domain (gTLD). It is not tied to any country, it has been around the longest, and it is the extension most people worldwide type by habit. The .com registry is operated by Verisign, and anyone anywhere can register a .com name.
.in: India's own domain
.in is India's country code top-level domain (ccTLD). The .IN Registry is run by NIXI, the National Internet Exchange of India, on behalf of the Government of India. It is open to anyone, in India or abroad, as long as the details are accurate and verifiable. Every .in registrant has to complete KYC within 7 days of registering.
.co.in: the commercial version of .in
.co.in sits one level below .in. It is intended for commercial use, it is open to anyone, and it follows the same registry rules and the same KYC requirement as .in. The only practical differences are the extra three characters and, at many registrars, a slightly lower price.

.IN vs .COM: The Differences That Actually Matter
1. Who your customers are
This is the deciding factor. A .in address tells a visitor, before they even open the site, that you are an Indian business serving Indian customers. That is exactly what a clinic in Vadodara, a coaching centre in Pune or a D2C brand shipping across India wants to say. A .com says nothing about location, which is why it suits a manufacturer exporting to the Gulf, a software product selling in the US, or anyone who does not want to look tied to one country.
2. What Google does with the extension
Google's own documentation on multi-regional sites says country-code domains like .in give a strong signal to users and search engines that a site is meant for a particular country. It also lists the trade-off plainly: a ccTLD can only target a single country. A .com has no country attached, so Google relies on other signals, such as the language of your content and hreflang tags, to work out who the site is for.
Two things people get wrong here. First, the extension does not replace good content. A .in site with thin pages will not beat a .com with helpful ones just because of the three letters. Second, a .in does not stop you from being found abroad for your brand name, but if most of your business comes from other countries, a .com is the more natural base. Google also treats a few country codes, such as .tv and .me, as generic; .in is not one of them, so it is read as India-specific.
3. Availability
.com has been open to the world for decades, so short, simple names are hard to find. The same word on .in is often still free. That is a real advantage when your brand name is a common Indian word or a city plus a service. Do not twist the name with extra hyphens or numbers just to get a .com; a clean .in is easier to say on the phone and print on a visiting card.
4. Rules and paperwork
.in comes with KYC. NIXI requires every .in registrant to verify their identity within 7 days, and the .IN Registry says KYC is mandatory under CERT-In guidelines (Section 70B of the IT Act 2000). If KYC is not done, the domain goes on hold: it stays yours, but your website and email on it stop working until you verify. .com has no such Indian KYC step; registrars usually ask you to confirm your email address instead.
Privacy works differently too. Many registrars offer a WHOIS privacy service for .com, while the .in registry does not allow privacy or proxy registration. That is why your .in contact details must be accurate and complete.
5. Price over the years, not just the first year
At ActiveServers a .in domain costs ₹650 + GST to register and ₹800 + GST a year to renew, and a .co.in costs ₹600 + GST to register. You can check current .com pricing on our domain registration page. Whichever extension you choose, look at the renewal price. Promotional ₹1 or ₹99 offers are common in India, but they usually need a multi-year purchase or a hosting plan, and the renewal is charged at the regular rate.
6. How customers read it
Indian buyers see .in addresses every day, from banks to startups, so it no longer looks unusual. International buyers are simply more used to .com. If your customers are mostly overseas, that familiarity matters more than any other point on this list.
.IN vs .CO.IN: Is There Any Real Difference?
Technically, very little. Both are managed by the same registry, both need the same KYC, and both are open to anyone. The differences are practical:
- Length. yourbrand.in is shorter to type and easier to say aloud than yourbrand.co.in.
- Typing habits. If you use .co.in and someone else owns the .in version, some visitors will type the shorter one and land on their site.
- Price. At ActiveServers, .co.in is ₹600 + GST against ₹650 + GST for .in.
So .co.in makes sense when the .in is already taken by an unrelated, inactive owner, or when you want a clearly commercial address. Before you settle on it, check who owns the .in version and what they do. You can register one on our .CO.IN domain registration page.

Should You Buy Both .in and .com?
If both are free and your budget allows, owning both is sensible. It stops someone else from building a site on the other version of your name, it catches visitors who type the wrong extension, and it keeps your options open if you expand later. Remember that NIXI does not allow buying .in names to resell or auction them, so only register names you will actually use or redirect.
The right way to own two is to pick one as your main website and permanently redirect (301) the other to it. Do not run the same website on both addresses. Google's guidance is to choose one preferred version when the same content appears on more than one URL, otherwise the two compete with each other in search.
If both domains sit in one ActiveServers account, our team can set the redirect up for you, and your business email can stay on whichever domain you choose as the main one.
Does a .in Domain Look Less Professional Abroad?
Not to most people, but it does say "Indian business" clearly, and that is the point of it. If you sell mostly within India, that message helps. If you are pitching to buyers in Europe or the US who have never heard of you, a .com feels more familiar. Plenty of Indian exporters solve this by running the main site on .com and keeping the .in redirected to it.

5 Mistakes People Make When Choosing a Domain Extension
- Choosing on first-year price alone. A ₹1 offer that renews at full price is not cheaper over three years. Compare renewal prices.
- Registering in the web designer's name. The registrant is the legal owner, and for .in the KYC must match that person or business. Register in your own name or your company's name.
- Picking .co.in while a competitor owns the .in. Customers who type the shorter version will reach them, not you.
- Forcing a .com with hyphens or numbers. brand-name-india.com is harder to say and remember than brandname.in.
- Expecting the extension to do the SEO. It helps Google understand who the site is for. Useful pages, speed and relevance are what get you ranked.
Checklist Before You Buy
- Where are most of my customers today, and where will they be in three years?
- Is the .in, .com and .co.in version of my name free? Who owns the ones that are taken?
- Is the name short and easy to spell when I say it on the phone?
- Have I checked the trademark on the IP India public search?
- What will I pay at renewal, not just in year one?
- Do I have the documents ready for .in KYC (Aadhaar, PAN, passport or GST certificate, depending on who is registering)?
- Will I register in my own or my company's name?
- Do I need business email on this domain from day one?

Frequently Asked Questions
Is .in better than .com for SEO in India?
Google treats .in as a strong signal that a site is meant for India, which helps it show your site to Indian searchers. It does not replace good content. A .com can rank in India too when its content and other signals point to Indian users.
Can a .in website rank outside India?
It can appear for searches such as your brand name, but Google notes that a country-code domain can only target a single country. If most of your customers are abroad, .com is the better base.
Is .co.in less trusted than .in?
Both are run by the same registry and need the same KYC. .co.in is simply longer. The bigger risk is someone else owning the shorter .in version of your name.
Can NRIs or foreign companies buy a .in domain?
Yes. Registrants outside India need to show a genuine connection to India through a signed declaration and an identity document such as a passport. The registry makes the final decision.
Do I need KYC for a .com domain?
Not the Indian NIXI KYC. That applies to .in and the .in family. For .com, registrars usually ask you to confirm your contact details and email address.
Which is cheaper, .in or .co.in?
At ActiveServers, .co.in costs ₹600 + GST to register and .in costs ₹650 + GST to register, with .in renewing at ₹800 + GST a year.
Can I switch from .in to .com later?
Yes. Move the website to the new domain and set permanent 301 redirects from every old URL to the matching new one, so visitors and search engines follow you. Keep the old domain renewed so the redirects keep working.
Can I use a .in domain for business email?
Yes. A .in domain works with business email hosting, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, the same way a .com does.
Is .in only for Indian companies?
No. .in is open to anyone, in India or abroad, provided the details are accurate and verifiable and KYC is completed.
What does .co.in stand for?
The "co" stands for commercial. .co.in is the commercial second-level domain under India's .in.
