AWS vs Azure in India: Which Cloud Is Right for Your Business?

17/10/2026  |  Cloud Computing, India

AWS vs Azure in India: cloud platform comparison for businesses

You have outgrown shared hosting, or the server under the office desk is showing its age. Someone says "move to the cloud," and the next question is always the same: AWS or Azure?

If you are weighing AWS vs Azure in India, here is the short answer. Azure usually fits better when your business already runs on Microsoft 365, Windows Server or SQL Server. AWS usually fits better for Linux, PHP and open-source stacks, for startups, and for apps that need to scale fast. And plenty of small websites need neither yet.

This guide uses INR examples, lists every India region that is live today, and corrects the free tier details that many older articles still get wrong. We sell and manage both platforms, so this is not a pitch for one side. If you want help, see our AWS cloud services in India or our Microsoft Azure services.

Quick verdict

If you are... Lean toward Why
Already on Microsoft 365, Windows Server, Active Directory/Entra ID or SQL Server Azure Native integration; reuse licences via Azure Hybrid Benefit
A startup or product team on Linux, PHP/Laravel, Node, Python AWS Widest service range, huge talent pool, easy start with Lightsail/EC2
A BFSI or regulated business needing in-India disaster recovery Either: decide by region and compliance needs Both now have two or more in-country regions; check service availability
A small business site or WooCommerce store under moderate traffic Maybe neither yet A managed VPS or hosting plan can be cheaper and simpler
Unsure or mixed needs The platform your team already knows Lowest risk; get a free assessment

AWS vs Azure India at a Glance

AWS is Amazon's cloud and the older of the two. It has more than 200 services, a huge pool of engineers who already know it, and a long record with startups, SaaS products and online stores. In India you will mostly see it behind startups, e-commerce brands, product teams and many global capability centres.

Azure is Microsoft's cloud. Its real strength is how neatly it plugs into what many Indian offices already run: Windows Server, SQL Server, Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Entra ID (the new name for Azure AD, in case you are reading older articles). Large enterprises, banks and government bodies lean on it, and so do smaller firms that live inside Microsoft tools.

We have left out market share numbers on purpose. The India-specific figures floating around online rarely say where they come from, and popularity will not tell you which cloud fits your stack. If you want help with either one, we set up and run both: managed AWS services and managed Azure services in India.

AWS vs Azure Data Centres in India: Regions, Latency and Disaster Recovery

A region is the physical place where your servers and data sit. It decides how fast your site feels to visitors, where your data lives for compliance, and what disaster recovery choices you have. Both clouds have grown their India footprint recently, and this is where many older articles are out of date.

Table B. India data-centre regions, as of 16 October 2026

Provider Region name City Notes
AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai), ap-south-1 Mumbai Launched 2016; 3 Availability Zones
AWS Asia Pacific (Hyderabad), ap-south-2 Hyderabad Launched 2022; 3 AZs; being expanded (US$21bn India plan 2026 to 2030)
Azure Central India Pune Availability Zones; common primary region
Azure South India Chennai
Azure West India Mumbai
Azure India South Central Hyderabad GA 6 Aug 2026; 3 AZs; new services added over time
Azure Jio India West / Central Jamnagar / Nagpur Partner regions with restricted access

The headline change is in Hyderabad. Microsoft made its India South Central region generally available on 6 August 2026, which takes Azure to four public regions in the country. AWS has had Mumbai since 2016 and Hyderabad since 2022, and it says it will invest over US$21 billion in Indian cloud infrastructure from 2026 to 2030. Microsoft cites a US$20.5 billion commitment. Big numbers do not make your app faster, but both companies plainly intend to keep building here.

One catch on the new Azure region. Microsoft's own launch announcement says eligible services are live from day one and more will arrive over time. Before you design around Hyderabad, check that the exact services you need are available there. The same habit applies to every AWS region too. Microsoft also runs two Jio-partner datacentres, at Jamnagar and Nagpur, but access to those is restricted, so most businesses will never touch them.

AWS Mumbai region vs Azure Central India: which is closer to your users?

For visitors in Gujarat and the rest of West India, Mumbai is the natural pick on both clouds: AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) and Azure West India. Azure Central India in Pune is the region many teams choose as their primary, and Pune is close to Mumbai too. Hyderabad and Chennai make more sense when your users, or your second site, are in the south. Distance is not everything, because network paths differ. The only honest answer is to measure.

AWS vs Azure disaster recovery in India

Both clouds now let you keep a primary site and a recovery site inside India. On AWS you can pair Mumbai with Hyderabad. On Azure you can pair Central India (Pune) with South India (Chennai) or with India South Central (Hyderabad). Microsoft's launch announcement says HDFC Bank plans to use Hyderabad as a dedicated disaster recovery region next to its Central India footprint, which is a sensible pattern for data that has to stay in the country.

A second region protects you from a data centre outage. It does not replace backups. If someone deletes a database, or ransomware encrypts it, a live copy in the second region often copies the damage too. Keep separate, tested backups as well, such as our automatic website backups. And again, not every service is in every region, so check both before you commit.

AWS vs Azure Services Compared, Service by Service

If you are new to this, the names are the hardest part. AWS and Azure sell almost the same building blocks under different labels. This table maps one to the other.

Table C. Service mapping: what each AWS service is called on Azure

What you need AWS service Azure equivalent
Virtual servers Amazon EC2 Azure Virtual Machines
Simple bundled VPS Amazon Lightsail B-series VM / App Service (no exact twin)
Object storage / backups Amazon S3 Azure Blob Storage
Managed SQL database Amazon RDS (MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server and more) Azure SQL Database / Azure Database for MySQL and PostgreSQL
DNS Amazon Route 53 Azure DNS
Kubernetes Amazon EKS Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)
Serverless AWS Lambda Azure Functions
CDN Amazon CloudFront Azure Front Door / Azure CDN
Identity AWS IAM Microsoft Entra ID
Gen-AI models Amazon Bedrock Azure OpenAI
Compute

Virtual servers are EC2 on AWS and virtual machines on Azure. Both let you choose CPU, memory and operating system, and both bill by usage. Amazon Lightsail is the gentle starting point on the AWS side: you pick a bundled plan with a fixed monthly price, a bit like a VPS. Azure has no exact twin. The closest options are small B-series virtual machines, or App Service if you are hosting a web app.

Storage and databases

S3 and Azure Blob Storage are both object storage, good for backups, images and file archives. For databases, Amazon RDS runs MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server and others, while Azure offers Azure SQL Database plus managed MySQL and PostgreSQL. If your workload is SQL Server, Azure tends to be smoother, especially when you already own the licences. MySQL and PostgreSQL run well on both.

Containers and serverless

Amazon EKS and Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) run containers on Kubernetes. AWS Lambda and Azure Functions run small pieces of code without a server for you to look after. Most small businesses do not need any of these on day one. If your developers do, either cloud will do the job.

AI services

AWS offers Amazon Bedrock for ready-made foundation models and Amazon SageMaker for building and training your own. Azure offers Azure OpenAI for OpenAI models and Azure Machine Learning. For most small businesses the realistic first project is a support chatbot or document automation. Whichever cloud you pick, run the pilot with a hard budget cap, because AI usage costs can climb quietly.

AWS vs Azure Pricing in India (INR)

Anyone who gives you one flat number for AWS vs Azure pricing in India is guessing. Your bill depends on server size, storage, how much data leaves the cloud, and how many hours the server runs.

How each cloud charges you

Both are pay-as-you-go. You pay for compute by the hour, minute or second depending on the service, for storage by the gigabyte, and for extras such as IP addresses, backups and support. The one that surprises small businesses is data transfer out, usually called egress. Moving data into the cloud is normally free. Sending it out to the internet, for example every time a visitor downloads an image, is charged per GB after a small monthly allowance. A media-heavy site can end up with a bandwidth bill that looks odd next to its server cost. Estimate egress before you choose a size.

How to pay less: Savings Plans, Reservations and Azure Hybrid Benefit

If a server runs around the clock, committing for one or three years cuts the price. On AWS that means Savings Plans or Reserved Instances. AWS advertises discounts of up to roughly 72 percent against on-demand pricing, so check the current figure on its pricing page before you quote it. On Azure it means Reservations or an Azure savings plan for compute.

Azure also has Azure Hybrid Benefit, which lets you bring existing Windows Server and SQL Server licences (with Software Assurance) to the cloud. If you already pay for those licences, this alone can change the Azure vs AWS result. Spot capacity, which is spare capacity at a steep discount, suits batch jobs and test environments. Do not put a live shop on it.

Table D. Ways to cut the bill

Lever AWS Azure Best for
Commit 1 to 3 years Savings Plans / Reserved Instances Reservations / Azure savings plan for compute Steady 24x7 workloads
Reuse existing licences Limited (BYOL in some cases) Azure Hybrid Benefit (Windows Server, SQL Server with Software Assurance) Microsoft-licensed businesses
Spare capacity Spot Instances Spot VMs Batch jobs, dev/test
Right-sizing and alerts AWS Budgets, Cost Explorer, Compute Optimizer Azure Cost Management, Azure Advisor Everyone: set up on day one

Discount percentages change. Check current figures on the official AWS and Azure pricing pages, and note the date you checked.

Real INR examples for small and growing businesses

Here are five setups we see often, priced in Mumbai for AWS and Central India for Azure, next to a simpler alternative. Numbers come from the official AWS Pricing Calculator and Azure Pricing Calculator on the date shown.

Table E. Monthly cost scenarios in INR, excluding GST

Scenario AWS setup (Mumbai) Azure setup (Central India) Simpler alternative Monthly ₹ (excl. GST)
Business website / company portal Lightsail 2 GB plan B2s VM + managed disk Linux VPS / cPanel hosting AWS ₹1,140
Azure ₹3,350
VPS ₹339
WordPress / WooCommerce store (moderate traffic) Lightsail 4 GB or EC2 t-series + S3 backups B-series VM + Blob backups WordPress / Ecommerce hosting AWS ₹2,350
Azure ₹2,000
Hosting ₹400
.NET app + MS-SQL (10 to 30 users) EC2 Windows + RDS SQL Server Windows VM + Azure SQL (with Hybrid Benefit if licensed) Windows VPS AWS ₹8,500
Azure ₹10,400
VPS ₹1,111
Laravel/PHP SaaS app (growing) EC2 + RDS MySQL + S3 + Route 53 VM/App Service + Azure Database for MySQL + Blob None AWS ₹7,200
Azure ₹5,200
Offsite backup, 500 GB S3 (Standard-IA / Glacier) Blob (Cool / Archive) Acronis backup AWS ₹180-575
Azure ₹100-570

Prices from the official AWS and Azure pricing calculators on 17 October 2026, on-demand, Linux unless stated, billed in INR / converted at ₹95 per USD, excluding 18% GST and data transfer.

If you are choosing for a small site, compare Amazon Lightsail vs an Azure virtual machine directly. Lightsail's bundled price is easy to predict, while an Azure VM bills compute, disk and bandwidth separately. For a steady business site, a managed VPS is often cheaper than either. You can look at our Amazon Lightsail plans, Amazon EC2 plans and Azure Virtual Machines, then set them next to a Linux VPS in India or a Windows VPS as the cheaper comparison point.

AWS vs Azure GST invoice and billing in India

Indian businesses can generally be invoiced in INR with GST, and the GST invoice is what lets you claim input tax credit. Confirm three things when you sign up: which billing entity issues your invoice, whether your account bills in rupees or dollars, and which payment methods are accepted. If the account bills in dollars, your bank may add currency conversion charges. Data transfer, as above, is the line that surprises people most.

What support costs and who answers when something breaks

Both clouds include a free basic support level, which mostly means billing help and documentation. Faster human help from the provider sits behind paid plans, priced as a monthly fee or a share of your usage depending on the plan, so read the current price list before you assume it is cheap. Many small teams skip those plans and use a managed partner instead. We do that for both clouds, with support over WhatsApp and phone, so you can explain a problem in your own language to someone who already knows your setup.

AWS vs Azure Free Tier in 2026 and Startup Credits

Free tiers changed, and some ranking articles have not caught up. A page that still says AWS gives you 12 months free is out of date.

Table F. Free tier and credits, as of 16 October 2026

Item AWS Azure
New-account offer Up to US$200 in credits (US$100 on sign-up + up to US$100 for completing activities) US$200 credit to use within 30 days
Duration Free plan lasts up to 6 months or until credits run out 30-day credit period, plus 12 months of selected free services
Always-free services 30+ services within monthly limits Some services stay free within limits
Older accounts Accounts created before 15 Jul 2025 stay on the legacy Free Tier Not applicable
Startup programme AWS Activate Microsoft for Startups

In plain words: AWS now gives new accounts up to US$200 in credits, and the Free plan ends after six months or when the credits are gone, whichever comes first. Azure gives a US$200 credit for 30 days, then selected services stay free for 12 months. Two things to remember. The AWS 12-month model applies only to older accounts. And Azure's free credit cannot be combined with Azure Hybrid Benefit, so licence savings start after you move to pay-as-you-go.

For startups, AWS Activate and Microsoft for Startups both offer credits and technical help to eligible companies. Amounts and rules change, and they are often tied to a funding stage or an approved partner, so read the current terms on the official pages before you build a plan around them.

Security, Compliance and the DPDP Act

Both platforms hold major global security certifications and publish their compliance reports. Neither one secures your setup for you, though. Under the shared responsibility model the provider looks after the data centre and hardware, and you look after your own configuration: access rules, encryption settings, backups and patching. Many cloud incidents trace back to the customer's side, such as an open storage bucket or a weak admin password.

DPDP Act timeline (not legal advice)

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 is the law. The DPDP Rules 2025 were notified on 14 November 2025, and most of the main duties for businesses apply 18 months later, from May 2027.

What it means in practice: know where personal data lives, pick an India region where you can, log who accesses it, and write a basic breach response plan. Choosing between AWS and Azure does not make you compliant by itself. Check your obligations with a lawyer. The official source is MeitY.

If you handle payments, RBI's rules expect payment system data to be stored in India. Both clouds have India regions that make this possible, but you still have to set it up and be able to prove it.

On identity, AWS uses IAM and IAM Identity Center. Azure uses Microsoft Entra ID, formerly Azure AD. If your staff already sign in to Microsoft 365, Entra ID is already there, which is one reason Azure feels easier for those teams. Whichever cloud you pick, put SSL certificates on every public site and look at server security solutions for the servers themselves.

Which Cloud Fits Your Tech Stack?

This is the table most people skip to. It covers AWS vs Azure for WordPress and PHP sites, AWS vs Azure for Windows Server and .NET apps, and AWS vs Azure for Microsoft 365 users, among others.

Table G. Which cloud for your tech stack?

Your stack / situation Usually better fit Why Related ActiveServers page
WordPress, PHP, Laravel, Node, Python on Linux AWS (or a VPS) Simple Lightsail/EC2 start, huge Linux ecosystem WordPress hosting in India · Linux VPS · AWS
ASP.NET / .NET Core + MS-SQL Azure First-class .NET tooling, SQL Server licensing benefits Windows hosting for .NET and MS-SQL · Windows VPS · Azure
Company runs on Microsoft 365 / Teams Azure Same identity (Entra ID), easier admin Microsoft 365 for business · Azure
Company runs on Google Workspace Either No Microsoft lock-in factor; decide on stack and cost Google Workspace
SAP / ERP / legacy Windows apps Azure (often) Lift-and-shift + Hybrid Benefit Azure
High-traffic e-commerce / marketplace AWS (often) Auto-scaling, CDN, mature e-commerce patterns Ecommerce hosting · AWS
AI chatbot / document automation pilot Either Bedrock vs Azure OpenAI: pilot on a small budget cap AWS · Azure

Read "usually better fit" as a lean, not a rule. A team that knows Azure well will often do better on Azure even with a Linux app.

AWS vs Azure for Startups, SMBs and Enterprises in India

AWS vs Azure for startups in India

Startups and product companies usually land on AWS. The reasons are the credits through AWS Activate, the size of the ecosystem, and how easy it is to hire people who already know it. If your first hire is a developer who has used AWS before, that matters more than a few percent on the bill.

Which is better for small businesses in India?

It depends on your Microsoft footprint. A small firm that lives in Microsoft 365 and runs a Windows-based accounts or ERP system will often find Azure easier. A small business with a WordPress or Laravel site will often find AWS, or a VPS, easier. Most should start smaller than they think, which is what the next section is about.

AWS vs Azure for ecommerce in India

A small WooCommerce store usually does fine on a good hosting plan or a Lightsail server. A high-traffic marketplace is a different story. AWS is the more common choice there because of auto-scaling, the CloudFront CDN and mature e-commerce patterns. If you are somewhere in between, our ecommerce hosting is a sensible place to compare from.

Enterprises, BFSI and government

Large and regulated organisations often choose Azure for its Microsoft estate and hybrid tools such as Azure Arc, while AWS is strong for digital-native business units and offers Outposts for hybrid. Many large firms use both. Multi-cloud works only when someone owns shared governance, budgets and security rules across the two. Without that, you get two bills and two sets of mistakes.

What about Google Cloud?

Google Cloud is the third big option and it is strong in data and analytics. Using Google Workspace for email is not, on its own, a reason to choose it for hosting. This guide stays with AWS and Azure because that is the decision most Indian SMBs are actually making. The Google Workspace row in Table G shows how we think about it.

Do You Even Need AWS or Azure? An Honest Answer

Often, no. If you run a brochure website, a small WooCommerce store, or one business app with predictable traffic, and you have a tight budget and nobody in-house who knows cloud, a VPS or managed hosting is usually cheaper and simpler. Our hosting and VPS plans run from a data centre in Pune. A managed Linux VPS covers most small sites, Windows VPS plans cover the .NET crowd, and our budget hosting plans and cPanel cloud hosting cover the simplest cases.

Move to AWS or Azure when you see traffic spikes that need auto-scaling, when you want managed databases, when you run several environments, when compliance or disaster recovery asks for it, when you want AI services, or when your company is deep in the Microsoft world.

Table H. Shared hosting, VPS or cloud?

Option Typical use Monthly ₹ band
Shared hosting Brochure site, blog, small business site ₹51 to ₹400
VPS Small WooCommerce store, single business app, predictable traffic ₹339 to ₹499
AWS / Azure Auto-scaling apps, managed databases, DR, compliance, AI pilots ₹1,100 to ₹10,000+ (from the calculators)

How to Choose: A 6-Step Decision Checklist

  1. List your workloads and the data they hold: website, store, database, email, backups.
  2. Check data residency and DPDP needs. Decide whether your data must stay in India.
  3. Map your current licences and stack: Microsoft 365, Windows Server, SQL Server, or Linux and open source.
  4. Price two or three real workloads in INR in both calculators, not a generic example.
  5. Check your team's skills and who will support you when something breaks.
  6. Plan your exit and backups before you move in. The lock-in checklist below shows how.
Exit plan: a five-point lock-in checklist
  • Use containers where it makes sense, so the app is not tied to one cloud's servers.
  • Describe your setup as code (Terraform or similar), so you can rebuild it elsewhere.
  • Prefer portable database engines such as MySQL and PostgreSQL over cloud-only ones.
  • Budget for egress, because leaving means moving your data out.
  • Keep independent backups outside the cloud you run on.

Migrating to AWS or Azure: What to Expect

Go in phases. Start with one workload, prove it works, then add the next. A single small or mid-size workload often takes two to six weeks, depending on how tangled it is.

The tools are different but the idea is the same. On AWS you will meet AWS Application Migration Service for servers and AWS Database Migration Service for databases. On Azure, Azure Migrate does most of the job. If you are moving a database, managed databases with Amazon RDS is a common destination on AWS. When you cut over, DNS matters, and Route 53 DNS is the AWS option. If your domain is not yet in one place, you can register your domain with us as well.

The mistakes we see most often:

  • Choosing on sticker price instead of a full monthly estimate.
  • Lifting everything at once, so one problem stops the whole business.
  • No tags or budgets, so nobody knows which project is spending what.
  • Forgetting the DNS, SSL and email cut-over until the last hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Azure vs AWS in India: which one is better?

Neither wins everywhere. Azure usually suits businesses already on Microsoft 365, Windows Server and SQL Server. AWS usually suits Linux, PHP and open-source stacks, startups and apps that need to scale. Price your real workload in both calculators before you decide, and check whether a VPS already covers what you need.

Is Azure cheaper than AWS in India?

Sometimes. For Windows Server and SQL Server workloads where you already own licences, Azure Hybrid Benefit can lower the bill noticeably. For Linux workloads the two are close, and the winner depends on instance type and region. Egress and support add to both. Use each official calculator with your own setup.

Do AWS and Azure have data centres in India? How many regions does each have?

Yes. AWS has two India regions, Mumbai and Hyderabad. Azure has four public regions: Central India (Pune), South India (Chennai), West India (Mumbai) and India South Central (Hyderabad, generally available since 6 August 2026). Microsoft also runs two restricted Jio-partner regions. Check that your services are live in the region you choose.

Which is better for a small business website in India?

For a simple business site, often neither. A managed VPS or good hosting plan is cheaper and easier. If you do want a cloud, AWS Lightsail is the simplest start for Linux and WordPress, and an Azure VM suits Windows and .NET. Move when you need auto-scaling, managed databases, or in-India disaster recovery.

Does the AWS free tier still last 12 months?

No, not for new accounts. Accounts created from 15 July 2025 get a Free plan with up to US$200 in credits (US$100 at sign-up, up to US$100 more for activities), lasting up to six months or until the credits run out. Older accounts stay on the legacy Free Tier. Check aws.amazon.com/free for current terms.

Are AWS and Azure compliant with the DPDP Act?

Both give you tools and India regions, but the Act applies to you as the business handling the data, not to the cloud alone. The DPDP Rules 2025 were notified on 14 November 2025, with most duties applying from May 2027. Choose an India region, control access, keep logs and plan breach response. This is not legal advice.

Can I use AWS and Azure together (multi-cloud)?

Yes, and some larger firms do. For small teams it usually adds cost and complexity: two bills, two skill sets, two security models. Use both only for a clear reason, such as Microsoft 365 identity on Azure with a Linux app on AWS, and agree shared governance and budgets first.

Can I pay for AWS or Azure in INR with a GST invoice?

Generally yes for Indian business accounts, but confirm when you sign up. Check which billing entity issues the invoice, whether the account bills in INR or dollars, and which payment methods are accepted. A GST invoice is what lets you claim input tax credit. A managed partner can also invoice you directly.

Conclusion: Which Cloud Should You Pick?

There is no single best cloud provider in India, only the best fit for your stack. So AWS vs Azure in India comes down to what you already run. If it is Microsoft 365, Windows Server or SQL Server, price Azure first. If it is Linux, PHP or open-source tools, or you are building a product that has to scale, start with AWS. If you have a brochure site or a small store with steady traffic, a VPS may serve you better than either, and cost less. Whatever you pick, price two real workloads in both calculators first.
